Laughter, math lessons, little hands in the dough, and closer interaction. Cookware, Cookware and recipe book being transformed into educational toys. These are some of the experiences that I have when I cook with my kids. For us, today, this space is associated with pleasure and the pleasure of food.

But of course it wasn’t always like that. I’ve been the team of the mothers who wouldn’t let the kids near the kitchen, for fear that an incident happened. Time passed and, gradually, I realized that bringing children to the kitchen could be one way to help with their education. And, look, it’s worked!

Want to know what are the other ways? Continue reading!

Food Education Can Be Playful

Like all other learning processes and development of children, the education need not and should not be restricted to conversations. I don’t think I should also make bargains of the type: “If you eat it all, let you watch tv!”. In my opinion, the food education can (and should) also be so playful. In my house, I usually have the following habits:

1-Telling Stories

I do this in two ways: talking of food, when it’s time to tell stories and speaking of stories, when it is feeding.

For example, my son is a fan of iron man, when he doesn’t want to eat vegetables, I would remind him that the vegetables are sources of iron. It would be very difficult to make him understand the nutritional benefits of vegetables, but when I use the story, he manages to assimilate the iron is the source of the “super power” of the iron man: the force. It is not a question of inventing that he will have x-ray vision, or something, but do associations can understand.

2-Cooking With Children

Cooking with them, is priceless. Our dynamic is quite simple and seize the moment to encourage the global development of my children. Then, when you’re preparing food, ask about school, talked about his friends, anyway, I try to create a bond.

In the days of preparing new recipes, I noted before (even though I know off the top of my head), so they can practice reading . Another thing that I find really cool is to use the right measures, because it is a way to develop their mathematical reasoning.

I always have two cautions: don’t force an approximation of the amount of items and avoid lines like: “read the next ingredient to train reading”. I always think it is better to act naturally. Thus, I wonder just what is the next ingredient and, if there is a need to use measures, I would like to show what are such measures (1/2, grams, litres, etc).

Now if you’re a busy mom, don’t worry! We know that every House has a routine. However, who knows the Sunday lunches can be made together? Or, maybe, the Saturday afternoons can be separated for you prepare healthy snacks and fun which can be consumed throughout the week, such as: wholemeal biscuits, potato rolls, fruit salad, etc.

3–Taking The Children To Fairs

I avoid taking my kids to the supermarket, but I like to take them at fairs. This is where they have the first contact with healthy foods that we consume, its colors, textures and smells. They help me to choose and we’ve started right there thinking our menu. Another strategy is to ask help on food hygiene, since, as they saw it, these foods are well exposed. I have observed that this contact is very suitable for them to learn the importance of food and even for creating awareness about the issue offood waste !

Realized that combine games to dietary education isn’t a big deal and can be done without changing the routine of the House? How about putting into practice today?
