Getty Museum
Getty Museum (Los Angeles, USA) – expositions, opening hours, address, phone numbers, official website.
California’s largest Getty Museum of Art is located on a hilltop in Santa Monica. It also includes the villa of oil tycoon Paul Getty, the richest man in the world at the time of his death. He wanted to make art accessible to everyone, so admission to the institution was and remains free.
The philanthropist was a strange man. He believed in the transmigration of souls and considered himself the reincarnation of Emperor Hadrian, so his museum is decorated in the tradition of Roman architecture.
What to watch
The exposition occupies 5 halls, in which objects of art are exhibited, from the era of antiquity to the present. The collection is organized not in chronological order, but thematically: “Gods and Goddesses”, “Trojan War”, “Theater”, etc. Here you can see old manuscripts, sculptures, paintings, jewelry, photographs, etc.
Some of the Getty Museum’s exhibits were considered illegally acquired and returned to Italy, but the collection is still considered one of the richest and most valuable in the United States.
The collection is constantly replenished, employees regularly travel to world auctions and buy art objects. Gardens are planted around the museum building, and a picturesque view opens up from the hill. Museum de Young
De Young Museum (San Francisco, USA) – expositions, opening hours, address, phone numbers, official website.
Excellent collections of anthropological artifacts that trace human history, plus an excellent collection of American art from the 19th and 20th centuries, are the main reasons why the de Young Museum is one of the most visited museums in San Francisco. Painting and sculpture, interior items and arts and crafts from the first decades of US history are presented in the museum to the fullest. An additional nice bonus is that the de Young Museum is located in the Golden Gate Park near the bridge of the same name, so here you can not only get a “dose” of culture, but also consolidate the result with a walk in the fresh air.
The de Young Museum got its name from the name of the director of the Associated Press, Michael de Young, who, among other things, is known for his collecting activities. Mr. Young managed to amass one of the finest collections of early American art in the world, which he presented to the public in 1895. In 2005, the de Young Museum moved to a new, futuristic building, larger but rather controversial from an architectural point of view. However, the observation tower that appeared at the museum only spurred the interest of the public – admission to it is free, and from the top there is a beautiful view of San Francisco and the bay.
